She has a scar on her cheek from when she was an excited 5 year-old, running up the stairs in fleece socks to do a sit-up contest with our dad. Now she has a prominent scar running along her spine, the result of multiple surgeries that saved her life. She also has scars running along the upper part of her right leg where it was amputated and a long scar all the way down her left leg from transplanting a vein. Scars tell a story. Some of them can be seen, some are invisible. They all count. And they're all beautiful because they signal the fact that you survived, that you showed up for life.
