Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family. Lemon, rosemary, and lavender open it - the three plants that define the Mediterranean scrubland, that you smell before you see it when the summer heat is on the hillside. This is what Cologne 4 is: a landscape in a bottle, and the lightest of the four by some distance. The heart is neroli and jasmine alongside rose and orange blossom - the same florals that grow in that landscape, fuller and warmer as the scent develops. Cedarwood and coumarin anchor the base; coumarin is the compound that gives dry summer grass its particular sweetness. The whole thing is warm, herbal, and solar without being heavy.
