Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family. Of the four colognes, this one was Franco Bompieri's own. He specified it as a tribute to the past - to a kind of fragrance that belonged to a certain Milanese moment, a certain way of presenting oneself, that he had watched disappear from the market over decades behind the chair. It opens with sandalwood - soft, a little hushed - then moves through lily of the valley and geranium before settling into musk, vanilla, and petitgrain. Petitgrain is the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree: woody, slightly aromatic, a note that appears in the great classic barbershop colognes and almost nowhere else anymore.
