Krista Bursey Highest Spiritual Warrior: Comuna 13 Acrylic & Spray Paint on Wall10 × 6 feet2019 Comuna 13, a district in Medellín, Colombia, is one of the most powerful examples of rebirth and transformation I have ever witnessed through street art. Spanning 12 neighbourhoods that wind up the side of a mountain, it was once considered one of the most dangerous places in the world—from the 1980s to around 2012—a territory marked by violence, cartels, and conflict. And then, something extraordinary happened. The people of Medellín chose art as their means of reclamation. What remains today is a living narrative—murals layered across the landscape, telling a story of light emerging from darkness. I had the honour of contributing my own expression to this powerful movement, painting alongside some of the original graffiti artists who helped shape its transformation. With deep gratitude to Seta Fuerte, I was able to realize a long-held vision: painting my Highest Spiritual Warrior overlooking the city of Medellín. This work is a direct extension of a piece I created at Ctrllab during MURAL Festival—same subject, evolving form. It speaks to the enduring strength within us, and our capacity to transform adversity into power. By turning inward, we access something far greater—something capable of carrying us beyond what we once believed possible. Show more
