Combier Liqueur D'Orange 750ML is a French triple sec distilled from Caribbean orange peels at 40% ABV (80 proof) in Saumur, France. Widely recognized as the world's first triple sec, this expression continues to be produced in the same copper alembic stills originally designed by Gustave Eiffel, earning a "Highly Recommended" rating from Drink Spirits and praise from Spirits Review as "the best triple sec available."Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Saumur, Loire Valley, France | Style: Triple Sec / Orange Liqueur | Distillery: Combier (est. 1834)Production & HeritageThe Combier distillery was founded in 1834 by Jean-Baptiste Combier in Saumur, a town in France's Loire Valley. The original recipe calls for a blend of hand-zested sweet and bitter Caribbean orange peels, which are sun-dried and then triple-distilled using French sugar beet spirit as the base. What truly distinguishes Combier from nearly every other orange liqueur on the market is its equipment: the century-old copper alembic stills in use today were designed by Gustave Eiffel — the same engineer responsible for the Eiffel Tower. The distillery has refused to adopt industrial essences or artificial dyes, instead maintaining the same handcrafted distillation process J.B. Combier established nearly two centuries ago.Tasting NotesAroma: Fresh orange zest dominates immediately, recalling the experience of peeling a ripe, juicy orange. Behind that primary burst sit subtler layers of candied citrus peel and a light, almost floral quality that adds dimension without competing.Taste: The entry is bright and sweet, with bold orange flavor arriving quickly and filling the palate. Mid-palate, a pleasant bitterness from the orange peel emerges, joined by notes of orange marmalade and honey. A subtle spiciness rounds things out, and on subsequent sips the sweetness recedes noticeably, allowing the true depth of the orange character to take center stage.Finish: Impressively long and clean, with sweet and bitter orange lingering together in balance. A cooling sensation from the orange peel oils develops gradually, and the sweetness fades to leave a refreshing, slightly dry citrus aftertaste. How to Drink Combier D'OrangeNeat or slightly chilled, Combier D'Orange reveals its full aromatic complexity and the interplay between sweet and bitter orange; a small pour at room temperature is the best way to appreciate the distillate's purity. As a cocktail ingredient, this is where Combier truly earns its reputation among bartenders: Margarita — The clean, assertive orange character cuts through lime and tequila without adding cloying sweetness, producing a sharper, more balanced drink. Sidecar — Combier's bright citrus and dry finish complement cognac beautifully, keeping the cocktail elegant rather than syrupy. Cosmopolitan — The natural bitterness from the orange peel adds structure alongside cranberry and citrus vodka, preventing the drink from tipping too sweet.
