Comet P40 Oil Kit Three components on your Comet P40 Soft Wash Sprayer take oil, and all three take a different oil. Put the wrong one in the wrong place and you can ruin a pump in a single day. This kit has all three, plus the printed oil change guide that shows you exactly which oil goes where, how much, and when. Each one is circled. A · PUMP — oil cup and sight glass. 13 mm drain plug underneath. B · GEARBOX — vented fill cap (large ring). Level screw (small ring), directly under the elbow. C · ENGINE — engine oil port on the Honda GX200 crankcase. C · Engine SAE 10W-30 detergent motor oil (Stens 770-132) 20.3 fl oz (0.60 L) Dipstick pushed all the way in: oil covers about half the stick. When to change it Component First change Every change after that A · Pump 50 hours Every 300 hours, at the end of every season, or whenever you replace a diaphragm B · Gearbox 400 hours Every 400 hours or once a year — whichever comes first C · Engine 20 hours (or the first month) Every 100 hours or 6 months — whichever comes first Where Honda, Comet and Softwash Technologies disagree, the shorter interval is printed. Change sooner in heat and dust. How to change it Run fresh water through the pump for five minutes, then shut the machine down. Park it level. Drain the engine oil while the engine is still warm. Screw the dispensing cap onto whichever bottle you are pouring from. A · Pump — 30W non-detergent Put a pan under the pump. The drain plug is a 13 mm hex plug on the underside. Take it out, let the crankcase drain, then refit and tighten it. Unscrew the cap on top of the oil cup and pour in new oil up to the mark on the sight glass. Refit the cap, run the machine a minute, then shut it off. The level drops as oil works through the pump, so top it back up to the mark. B · Gearbox — 80W-90 Put a pan under the gearbox. Take out the 1/2 in hex drain plug underneath, drain it completely, then refit and tighten the plug. Take out the level screw directly under the elbow. It takes the same wrench as the drain plug. Unscrew the red vented cap and pour 80W-90 in until it runs out of the level screw hole. That is full. Expect it to take about 9.5 oz. Refit the level screw, then the vented cap. That cap has to go back on — a sealed plug builds pressure and pushes oil past the seals. C · Engine — 10W-30 With the engine warm, put a pan under it and take out the drain plug at the base of the crankcase. Open the engine oil cap as well — the dipstick is in it — so it drains fully. Refit and tighten the drain plug. Pour in 20.3 fl oz (0.60 L) of 10W-30. Push the dipstick all the way in and read it. The oil should cover about half the stick. Top it up if it is short. Never Put engine oil in the pump — it foams and starves the seals. Put pump oil or engine oil in the gearbox. Overfill any of the three. Run the pump dry, or sit in bypass over 60 seconds. Pour used oil on the ground or down a drain. Watch for Milky or white pump oil. Water in the oil. A diaphragm has ruptured — stop before it wrecks the pump. A pump level that moves. Normal while priming. Only judge it with the pump stopped. A level that keeps dropping. Check the inlet filter and suction line, then the diaphragms.
