The expedition was tasked with forcing Japan to open its ports to trade with the United States. At the time, Japan had been closed to foreigners for over 200 years, and Perry's expedition represented the first significant contact between Japan and the Western world in that period. Perry arrived in Japan with four ships, including the USS Mississippi and the USS Susquehanna. The Japanese government initially refused to meet with Perry, but after he threatened to use force, they agreed to negotiate. A treaty was signed on March 31, 1854, that opened the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to American ships, and established a U.S. consulate in Shimoda.
