Its slender body features a bold black horizontal stripe extending from the snout through the tail, bordered by brilliant electric blue to pale blue coloration. The streamlined profile and constant, purposeful swimming make it an exceptionally active addition to a marine aquarium. Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, Australia, southern Japan, and islands throughout the central Pacific, this species inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reef flats, and seaward reefs. In nature, it establishes cleaning stations where larger fish deliberately approach to have parasitic crustaceans, damaged tissue, and mucus removed from their bodies. The Common Cleaner Wrasse remains active throughout the day and frequently moves throughout the aquarium searching for feeding opportunities and interacting with other fish. Rockwork should offer secure nighttime retreats while leaving open areas where the wrasse can establish its characteristic cleaning activity. A mature community aquarium containing compatible fish is generally more appropriate than a sparsely stocked system. Moderate water movement, excellent oxygenation, and stable water quality are recommended. This species does not require a deep sand bed for sleeping, instead seeking shelter within reef structure at night. A tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover is essential. Cleaner wrasses are agile jumpers and may escape through small openings, especially when startled or newly introduced. Diet and Feeding The Common Cleaner Wrasse has a highly specialized natural diet consisting primarily of parasitic crustaceans and mucus removed from other fish. This feeding specialization is the primary challenge associated with keeping the species in captivity.
