A Response to Richard J. Mouw's 'He Shines In All That's Fair' Written by David J. Engelsma The theory, or doctrine as many call it, of Common Grace had an able advocate in the Ref ormed Dutch theologian and statesman Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920). Not everyone agreed with it, causing deep dissention in the Christian Reformed Church in North America and a split in the 1920s. A book by widely known evangelical theologian Richard J. Mouw, 'He Shines in All That’s Fair: Culture and Common Grace' (2001), has renewed the debate in some Christian periodicals. According to Mouw, Common Grace is essential for Christian life in society, especially the Christian’s cooperation with non-Christians in forming good, godly culture. In his book, the author, a Protestant Reformed theologian, takes issue with Mouw, saying that there are solid, indeed urgent reasons, both theological and practical, for challenging claims that the theory is part of the body of Reformed truth.
