Aramis, launched in 1966 and created by the great Bernard Chant, was an icon of classic masculinity, is to be discontinued. It was a derivative of Gris' Cabochard (by the same perfumer) but replacing the floral notes with green aromatic ones. This compound reproduces the original pre-IFRA formula with authentic oakmoss levels, musk ambrette, and animalic notes that modern reformulations have stripped away. The opening is sharp and challenging: sparkling aldehydes cut through herbal artemisia and bergamot, lifted by thyme and clover. The heart reveals a complex spiced floral accord of patchouli, sage, jasmine and cardamom, grounded by powdery orris root. The base is where Aramis earns its reputation – rich leather, dense oakmoss, warm sandalwood, vetiver and amber create a foundation of unmistakable masculinity. The result is a fragrance of commanding presence with exceptional longevity and projection – not for the faint-hearted. To evaluate properly, dilute to 14% and use a smelling strip.
