Sugar-coated almonds, nuts, seeds, spices, and other confectionery specialties were enjoyed during weddings, holidays, baptisms, anniversaries, and family gatherings. They became symbols of celebration, prosperity, and good fortune. Over time, the tradition evolved. During Carnival celebrations, edible confetti were gradually replaced by less expensive substitutes. Eventually, small pieces of paper took their place. The name remained. Today, the same word means two different things: In Italy, confetti are edible. In America, confetti is paper. Most people have never heard this story. Neither had we.
