Edge, perimeter, thickness and silhouette become active parts of the work, placing painting close to relief, construction and sculpture.Several distinct positions meet within that heading. Ted Stamm, included shortly after his death in 1984, extended serial abstraction into shaped supports, street actions and site-specific activity. Allan Graham moved between painting, language, printed matter and alternative identity, resisting a fixed medium or signature. Otis Jones pursued materially exact painting-objects whose modest supports and physical thickness refused both representation and spectacle.The catalogue records these practices before they separated into their later histories. Constructures was not an established movement but an attempt to name a shared pressure at the boundary of painting.The cover carries no reproduction.
