Proper control of pH is one of the most critical functions of a marine fish or reef aquarium. If you only measure one parameter of your aquarium, measure the alkalinity! It is the most important one. If pH is allowed to drop due to decay of organic matter, over saturation with carbon dioxide or any type of acid addition, then the animals will suffer and if it drops too much, they will become ill or die. Continuum recommends that you maintain an alkalinity level of 7 to 11 dKH (2.5 to 4 meq/L) and a pH of 8.3. Note: Aquarists keeping SPS corals should consider keeping alkalinity at 7 to no more than 9 dKH (2.5 to 3.21 meq/L).
