The Convict Cichlid is one of the most easily bred species in the hobby and it's an ideal fish for newcomers to cichlids and fish breeding in general. Although it's a sturdy fish, not fussy about food and can tolerate some changes in the water parameters (thanks to its massive natural range), the Convict Cichlid is not a good community tank and it is best maintained in a species tank due to its aggressive nature all the way to downright violent when breeding. It will take on fish several times its own size and win with ease.
