Scoring an 8.4 overall (8.5 taster score) from American Whiskey Magazine, this expression represents one of the more ambitious entries in the growing American apple brandy category. Quick Facts: ABV: 46% (92 Proof) | Origin: Louisville, Kentucky, USA | Age: 6 Years | Distillery: Copper & Kings Production & Heritage Copper & Kings operates out of the Butchertown neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a district steeped in distilling history. The base apple wine is sourced from Michigan, specifically selected for its high-acid, aromatic character, then exclusively copper pot-distilled using alembic stills. After distillation, the spirit rests for six years in a combination of Kentucky bourbon barrels and new American oak — a dual-barrel approach that layers bourbon-derived sweetness beneath the orchard fruit core. One of the distillery's more unusual production choices involves five subwoofers that play music to the aging barrels around the clock, a technique they call Sonic Aging. The vibrations are said to create a "distillate wave" that increases contact between the brandy and the barrel walls, potentially accelerating extraction of wood sugars and tannins. Tasting Notes Aroma: Fresh red apple dominates the nose, followed by warm cinnamon and toasted oak. Underneath, there are suggestions of ripe cherry and candied plum that emerge as the glass opens up. Taste: The palate opens clean and apple-forward, with crisp orchard fruit giving way to baking spice and a mid-palate sweetness reminiscent of dried fruit leather. Darker notes of burned sugar flicker briefly at the peak before receding. At 92 proof, the alcohol integration is remarkably restrained, allowing fruit and wood to share the stage without heat dominating. Finish: Medium-long with a slightly dry, appley character and gentle tannic grip that recalls grape skins. A velvety texture lingers alongside fading cinnamon and oak. How to Drink Copper & Kings 6 Year Neat or with a few drops of water is the natural starting point — the six years of barrel aging have built enough complexity to reward undiluted sipping, and water opens the fruit aromatics further. For cocktails, try it in a Jack Rose, where the clean apple backbone and cinnamon spice intensify the grenadine and citrus elements. It also works well in an Apple Brandy Old Fashioned, substituting directly for bourbon to showcase the orchard-fruit-meets-oak profile. A Corpse Reviver No. 1 is another strong match, as the brandy's dry finish and proof stand up to the vermouth and Calvados traditionally called for in that drink. The 92-proof strength is well-integrated with minimal burn. How does Copper & Kings 6 Year compare to Laird's Bonded? Both are American apple brandies bottled at robust proof points, but Copper & Kings uses alembic copper pot distillation and bourbon barrel aging in Kentucky, while Laird's Bonded draws on a longer New Jersey heritage and straight apple brandy tradition. Reviewers have noted that when age, alcohol content, and cost are weighed side by side, the Copper & Kings release compares favorably and often comes in at a slightly lower price. Is Copper & Kings 6 Year good for sipping neat? Yes — six years of barrel maturation and the 46% ABV give it enough depth and structure for neat drinking, with well-balanced fruit, spice, and wood notes that don't require dilution to enjoy. Where is Copper & Kings 6 Year made? It is distilled at the Copper & Kings distillery in the Butchertown neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, using apple wine sourced from Michigan orchards known for high-acid, aromatic fruit. What foods pair well with Copper & Kings 6 Year? Aged cheddar cheese complements the apple and oak notes; roasted pork tenderloin with an apple glaze echoes the brandy's orchard fruit core; pecan pie matches its caramel and spice character; charcuterie boards with dried fruits mirror the dried fruit leather quality on the palate; and dark chocolate with sea salt contrasts the brandy's subtle sweetness. What sizes does Copper & Kings 6 Year come in? The standard offering is a 750ml bottle at 92 proof (46% ABV). Is Copper & Kings 6 Year worth the price? It positions as a mid-premium American apple brandy, competing directly with established names like Laird's Bonded while offering a distinctive production story and six years of age — a combination that delivers strong value relative to its peer set. Why Copper & Kings 6 Year? American apple brandy remains a small but growing category, and few producers commit to a full six-year age statement with the transparency Copper & Kings provides here. The combination of Michigan apple wine, alembic copper pot distillation, and dual aging in bourbon and new American oak barrels creates a profile that bridges the gap between traditional apple brandy and the bourbon-cask influence Kentucky drinkers already appreciate. The Sonic Aging process — whether you view it as innovation or novelty — adds a genuine point of differentiation no other major American brandy producer replicates. With an 8.4 overall score from American Whiskey Magazine backing up the quality claims, this is a bottle that earns its place through verifiable production choices rather than marketing alone.
