Traditionally grown at a 45° angle, these days you’re just as likely to see them grown vertically, often in patio pots. Usually grown on dwarfing rootstocks, which limits eventual height to just a couple of metres or so, these trees make a great option for gardeners who don’t have much space but who still want to get their orchard on. Apples and pears make for the best cordon trees, and boy do we have a couple of crackerjack varieties just for you. ‘Bramley’s Seedling’ is widely regarded as one of the very best cooking apples, reliably yielding large tart fruit that works wonderfully in comforting crumbles, sticky sauces and piping-hot pies. ‘Concorde’ is perfectly suited to the UK climate, easy to grow well in colder, more exposed locales.
