The Corker originated at the London Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012. The design of the temporary summer pavilion was a joint project by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei. The stool was part of the overall concept of using cork; a natural, insulating material, warm and soft to the touch and which possesses a strong olfactory sensation. The silhouette of a wine bottle cork served as the inspiration for Corker, almost alluding to pop art with its direct, simply enlarged reference to an object taken from everyday culture.
