First, sword plants are often grown emersed (above water) at the nursery, and the emersed form looks different, with more inward-folded leaves, from the submersed form that develops the thin, curly corkscrew leaves this plant is known for. Second, when you plant it underwater, it may shed some of those emersed-grown leaves as it transitions to submerged growth — this melt is normal for swords. Don't discard it: the roots and crown stay alive, and as it converts, it grows the twisted submersed leaves you're after. So if it looks different at first or drops a few leaves, that's expected; give it a couple of weeks to settle in and develop its corkscrew form.
