Cornflower is an old garden plant – also known as bachelor’s button – that blooms in beds, borders and pots from late spring to late summer. Whereas the common cornflower is famous for its characteristic bright blue colour, the ‘Polka Dot Mix’ variety is a mixture of blue, brown, red, pink, lavender and white, and the plants grow up to 30 cm in height. In terms of symbolism, the cornflower is surrounded by much folklore and mythology. In the 19th century, this was the ‘blue flower’ of Romanticism, symbolising desire, love and the metaphysical search for the infinite. To date, it is the symbol of many countries and organisations.
