Corona Extra 12Pk Cans is a Mexican pale lager with a 4.6% ABV, sold here as a 12-pack of 12 oz cans. Originally formulated by German-born brewmaster Adolph H. Schmedtje in 1922, this remains one of the most widely recognized beer brands on the planet and the flagship of Grupo Modelo's portfolio. Quick Facts: ABV: 4.6% | Origin: Mexico | Style: Pale Lager | Brewery: Grupo Modelo S.A. de C.V. (imported by Constellation Brands in the U.S.) Production & Heritage Grupo Modelo, headquartered in Mexico City, has been brewing Corona Extra for over a century. The recipe calls for a mashbill of barley malt, non-malted cereals — specifically corn — hops, and water. The corn adjunct is the defining production choice: it lightens the body and promotes the crisp, dry finish that distinguishes Corona from all-malt lagers. The result is a straightforward pale lager designed to be sessionable and refreshing, particularly in warm weather. Tasting Notes Aroma: Light grain and subtle malt sweetness greet the nose first, followed by muted citrus and a faint honey-like quality. The overall impression is clean and restrained. Taste: The entry is soft, almost neutral, with mild malt sweetness arriving mid-palate. Hop bitterness is deliberately understated, allowing the corn-driven crispness to dominate. The balance tilts toward drinkability rather than complexity. Finish: Short and slightly bitter with a dry, clean close. There is little lingering flavor, which keeps each sip feeling fresh and encourages the next. How to Drink Corona Extra The classic serve is ice-cold straight from the can, optionally with a squeeze of fresh lime wedge pressed into the opening — a ritual that has become inseparable from the brand's identity. Corona Extra also works as a versatile beer cocktail base. A Michelada pairs its clean body with lime juice, hot sauce, and Clamato for a savory, spicy cooler. A Beer Margarita (Beergarita) blends a frozen margarita with an inverted Corona for a two-layer party drink that balances tequila's bite with the lager's lightness. A Chelada — simply Corona mixed with lime juice and salt over ice — highlights the beer's crisp finish without overwhelming it. Best For Backyard barbecues and outdoor grilling sessions Beach coolers and poolside gatherings Casual watching parties for sports or events Stocking a home fridge with a reliable, crowd-friendly lager Frequently Asked Questions What does Corona Extra taste like? Corona Extra is a light, crisp pale lager with mild malt sweetness, faint honey and grain notes, and a dry, slightly bitter finish. The corn adjunct keeps the body thin and refreshing rather than rich. How does Corona Extra compare to Modelo Especial? Both are brewed by Grupo Modelo and share a Mexican pale lager identity, but Modelo Especial has a richer, slightly fruitier malt character and a fuller body. Corona Extra is drier and more neutral, leaning on crispness over flavor depth. Is Corona Extra good for beginners? Corona Extra is an approachable, easy-drinking lager with low bitterness and a clean profile, making it an ideal starting point for anyone new to beer or those who prefer lighter styles. Where is Corona Extra made? Corona Extra is brewed by Grupo Modelo S.A. de C.V. in Mexico. In the United States, it is exclusively imported and distributed by Constellation Brands. What foods pair well with Corona Extra? Fish tacos work well because the beer's crispness cuts through fried batter and complements fresh salsa. Ceviche mirrors the citrus notes often added by a lime wedge. Grilled chicken or shrimp skewers pair naturally thanks to the lager's clean, palate-cleansing finish. Nachos loaded with jalapeños benefit from the light body cooling the heat, and a simple bowl of guacamole with chips lets the beer's mild sweetness shine alongside creamy avocado. What sizes does Corona Extra come in? Corona Extra is widely available in 12 oz cans (including this 12-pack format), 12 oz bottles, 24 oz single cans, and larger multi-pack configurations depending on market. Is Corona Extra worth the price? Corona Extra positions as a mainstream import lager — priced slightly above domestic macro lagers but well below craft offerings. For a consistently clean, easy-drinking beer that suits a wide range of social settings, it delivers reliable value in its segment. Why Corona Extra? Corona Extra's staying power comes down to a deliberate brewing choice: the use of corn as an adjunct creates a body lighter and drier than most all-malt competitors, which is precisely what made it a warm-weather staple across more than 180 countries. It is not a beer designed to challenge the palate — it is engineered for consistency and refreshment. With over a century of continuous production behind it and the resources of one of Mexico's largest brewing operations, Corona Extra remains the benchmark that defines the Mexican pale lager category for most drinkers worldwide.
