While composing this concerto I decided to stick closely to a rondo form. Throughout the piece, each member of the ensemble shares a moment with the timpani. Some of these moments are a dialog and some are more united. As the piece continues, the ensemble and soloist grow further apart musically. In the third section, the ensemble and soloist act independently of each other, in their own specific tempi. After the cadenza, the ensemble and soloist are reunited. From measure 159, the soloist is playing somewhat independent of the ensemble. However, the timpanist should be back line up with the ensemble by measure 173.- Timothy Corpus Number of players: 11 Difficulty: Advanced Instrumentation: Soloist: 5 timpani Player 1: Glockenspiel Player 2: Vibraphone, suspended cymbal Player 3: Vibraphone Player 4: Marimba (4.3 octave), suspended cymbal Player 5: Marimba (5 octave), suspended cymbal Player 6: Tam tam, snare drum, log drum Player 7: Bass drum Player 8: Large tam tam, triangle, tambourine, bowed crotales (E, G, C, D), shekere Player 9: Lion's roar, shakers, bowed crotale (E), 3 glass bottles, bamboo chimes, djembe Player 10: Bongos, 4 tom toms, shakers
