"In Hawai’i, a lei lā’ī is often braided to honor advancing into a new phase of life. It is also a symbol of love, protection and abundance. For ocean people, when a loved one passes on from this life, we collectively paddle out to sea to release our lei in celebration of their life. I have a memory from my youth, experiencing the emotions at one of these celebrations. “Corridors of time”. . . I remember these words running through my adolescent mind as I watched the lei drifting out to the horizon. Many years later, those words are still inspiring me and they now live in this piece. We must honor these corridors and generations, those who came before us and paved the way. Those who lead us to know kindness and inspire us every day to be brave and humble.
