Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple', commonly known as the Purple Smoke Bush, is a striking deciduous shrub grown for its rich, rounded foliage and wonderfully atmospheric summer display. The leaves emerge deep wine-purple and retain their dramatic colour throughout the growing season before developing vibrant shades of scarlet, orange and red in autumn. During summer, clouds of delicate pinkish-purple flower plumes appear above the foliage, creating the soft, smoky effect that gives this beautiful shrub its common name. Its bold colour and architectural form make it an impressive specimen plant or a dramatic addition to mixed borders. Plant in full sun for the richest foliage colour, although it will also tolerate partial shade. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly while the plant becomes established. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and requires little routine feeding. Pruning is not usually necessary beyond removing damaged or misplaced growth. If grown primarily for its foliage, it can be cut back more firmly in late winter or early spring to encourage larger, more vigorous leaves; however, this will reduce or prevent flowering during the following summer.
