Small glossy green leaves are complemented by neat white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by bright red berries in autumn that are often taken by birds. Thriving in full sun or light shade and in most moist but well-drained soils, it’s ideal for banks and slopes, the front of borders, and to spill over walls. Minimal pruning is needed to control spread. In Irish gardens it typically grows to around 20–30cm in height and can spread 2–3m over time; fully hardy. To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height.
