The viscous coupling (ERC5708) is a fluid-filled unit used in the cooling fan drive system, controlling the engagement of the engine-driven fan based on temperature. It uses a sili cone fluid to transfer rotational force from the water pump pulley to the fan, increasing airflow when the engine is under thermal load. A failing viscous coupling typically presents as engine overheating, excessive fan noise at speed, or the fan freewheeling without resistance when the engine is cold.
