As conflicting accounts of the battle emerge, the truth becomes increasingly elusive and personally devastating. Denzel Washington delivered another commanding performance, and Meg Ryan's casting against type as a tough combat pilot was a revelation. The film also featured early career-changing roles for Matt Damon (who lost 40 pounds for his role) and Lou Diamond Phillips. Director Edward Zwick (Glory, The Last Samurai) brought his signature ability to tell intimate human stories against the backdrop of war.
