It develops adult BLS, CPR, AED, choking response, recovery position and emergency response skills through demonstrations, supervised practice, scenarios and competence checks, supporting Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF)-aligned evidence and compliance. Aims The aims of this Basic Life Support practical course are to: Develop learners’ knowledge and practical, supervised hands-on clinical competence in adult Basic Life Support, CPR and AED use in line with current clinical, workplace safety and CSTF expectations Strengthen confidence and timely real-world operational readiness to respond safely and effectively to life-threatening emergencies Support evidence of formally assessed practical and workplace-verified ongoing BLS competence for workplace records, audits and compliance checks. Learning objectives This Basic Life Support classroom-based course will: Cover adult basic life support principles, CPR techniques and effective AED use in line with current guidance Explain recognition of deterioration, unresponsiveness, abnormal breathing and cardiac arrest Reinforce airway opening, rescue breaths, choking response, paediatric choking, anaphylaxis, and infant/child CPR and recovery position techniques Demonstrate escalation, communication and handover during emergency situations Introduce DNACPR and ReSPECT awareness within local policy and professional and clinical role boundaries Provide supervised practice using BLS equipment and realistic simulated emergency scenarios Support reporting, documentation, record-keeping, safe practice and professional accountability and governance standards. Learning outcomes By the end of this Basic Life Support face-to-face course, learners will be able to: Recognise signs of clinical deterioration, unresponsiveness and cardiac arrest Summon emergency help promptly in line with local procedures Explain the importance of resuscitation guidance and local policy Start CPR promptly and perform high-quality chest compressions with correct depth, rate and recoil Deliver rescue breaths where trained and use an AED safely following prompts Respond appropriately to adult choking and place an unconscious breathing adult in the recovery position Respond appropriately to paediatric choking, anaphylaxis, and infant/child CPR Communicate, escalate, and hand over clearly, and explain responsibilities, record-keeping, and DNACPR/ReSPECT awareness in care settings. Course assessment Assessment includes active participation in the classroom practical session Trainer-led simulations and discussion are used to confirm understanding of BLS principles Learners are observed carrying out adult CPR techniques Assessment includes safe AED use, choking response, recovery position and emergency-response scenarios Practical competence checks use relevant resuscitation equipment and trainer feedback. Is this an online basic life support course? No. This is a classroom-based practical course delivered face-to-face at The Mandatory Training Group’s Coventry Training Centre. What will I practise during the BLS session? You will practise CPR, AED use, choking response, recovery position, scene safety, communication, escalation and emergency response scenarios using relevant training equipment. Where does the practical BLS session take place? The practical session takes place at The Mandatory Training Group’s Coventry Training Centre, HDTI Building, Coventry University Technology Park, Swift Road, Coventry, CV1 2TT. The venue offers free on-site parking, easy access via local bus routes, is within walking distance of Coventry Railway Station, and provides complimentary refreshments throughout the day. What should I do before attending the practical course? Please arrive 10–15 minutes before the course start time to allow time for registration and to ensure the course begins promptly. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for participation in basic life support demonstrations and practical activities. What do I need to bring with me? Please bring a valid form of photo identification and your booking confirmation, either printed or available on your mobile device. Is there any important travel information I should be aware of? Roadworks and a road closure on Mile Lane may cause travel delays and disruption to usual routes. To access the HDTI Building, please approach via Ringway St Johns and follow the signs for "Tech Park" through Short Street, Parkside, Puma Way and Swift Road. We recommend allowing extra travel time and checking local traffic conditions before travelling. When do I receive my BLS certificate? Upon successful completion of the classroom session and practical assessment, your certificate will be made available online through ComplyPlus™ LMS. It is issued as a quality-assured PDF and can be downloaded directly from your learner account. How long is the BLS certificate valid for? The certificate is valid for 1 year unless earlier refresher training is required due to employer policy, local risk assessment, role changes, equipment changes, guidance updates or incident learning. What happens if I do not pass the BLS practical assessment? If you do not meet the required standard, the trainer will provide feedback and guidance. Certification is issued only after all required practical competence checks have been completed successfully. Can employers book group BLS training? Yes. Employers can enquire about group or in-house Basic Life Support training, subject to trainer availability, venue suitability, equipment requirements and location.
