This mineral is primarily composed of copper and sulfur, but its beauty lies in its distinctive blue to violet-blue coloration, which can vary depending on its exposure to light and oxidation. Covellite typically forms through the alteration of other copper minerals in hydrothermal environments, especially where conditions involve low temperatures and the presence of sulfur. It can also occur as a result of the oxidation of copper ore deposits.
