Dolgo is a charming heirloom crabapple that first originated in Russia in the late 1800’s. It is renowned for its small, oblong, ruby-coloured fruit, which typically ripens in late summer or early fall. The fruit grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter, and although tart, is excellent for making jellies, jams, and cider. Dolgo crabapples are also exceptionally high in natural pectins! Additionally, the brightly colored fruit will remain through winter, providing visual interest and food for birds. Dolgo Crabapple typically reaches a height of 12 to 15 feet making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8 and resistant to many common pests and diseases like apple scab, rust, fire blight, and aphids, Dolgo is a low-maintenance choice with high reward.
