Crassula socialis, commonly known as Kommadagga Crassula, is a diminutive succulent endemic to a very restricted area of South Africa's Eastern Cape. It forms dense cushions of numerous tiny rosettes and is naturally confined to cliff faces, where it grows within narrow rock crevices. The species name socialis, meaning social or growing in colonies, aptly describes its closely clustered growth habit. Tiny geometric rosettes The individual rosettes measure only around 15–20 mm across and are composed of four distinct rows of closely arranged leaves. Each fleshy leaf is approximately 4–7 mm long, broadly ovate to almost circular and often develops an attractive reddish flush. As the plant gradually produces additional rosettes, they crowd together to form compact, intricate cushions. Delicate spring flowers Despite its very small stature, Crassula socialis produces numerous slender flower stems that rise above the foliage, bringing the flowering plant to approximately 60 mm high. Each stem carries clusters of tiny white, cup-shaped flowers. In its native South African habitat flowering occurs during spring, principally September and October. A specialised Eastern Cape cliff-dweller In the wild, Crassula socialis is restricted to an area between King William's Town and Kommadagga, where it occurs predominantly in south- and south-east-facing rock crevices. It is classified as Rare in South Africa because of its extremely limited known distribution, although its inaccessible cliff habitat provides considerable natural protection and the species is not currently considered threatened. Growing Crassula socialis Grow in a shallow, very free-draining succulent mix in bright filtered light or partial shade. Its natural preference for sheltered rock crevices makes protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun advisable. Water thoroughly when required, allowing excess water to drain freely and the growing medium to dry between waterings.
