Creditors is a tale of revenge as only Strindberg could tell it. Its complex, hilarious plot is a study of human nature displayed in three two-person scenes. Novelist Tekla and Adolph, her younger husband are manipulated in a macabre dance of wills by Gustav, Tekla's former (older) husband. This adaptation strives to juxtapose a more natural and modern syntax than the older translation/adaptations, while following through on Strindberg's edicts about theatre and his experiments with Naturalism and Symbolism. The playwright hopes also to further these experiments with an expressionistic and surreal take on the play in regards to staging and lighting. Indeed, Strindberg's work really pointed forward to these movements. 'Creditors' is indeed a deeply psychologically modern and accessible ghost story and, in the playwright's view, can only be truly understood and experienced by a modern audience, if it is directed with these perceptions in mind.
