Crimson Sweet is a classic open-pollinated watermelon variety that produces large, oval to oblong fruits typically weighing 20-30 pounds (sometimes up to 40+ pounds under ideal conditions), with smooth, medium-green rind featuring dark green stripes and a distinctive light green to white background. The flesh is deep crimson-red, very juicy, crisp, and exceptionally sweet with a high sugar content and refreshing watermelon flavor—often described as one of the best-tasting traditional varieties, with few to no white seeds (seedless in some strains, but generally has small black seeds). It's fantastic eaten fresh in thick wedges, cubed for fruit salads, blended into smoothies or agua fresca, grilled for a smoky twist, or used in sorbets and cocktails for that classic summer taste. This variety is a solid choice for Utah because it's heat-tolerant and performs well in our hot, dry summers with full sun and well-drained soil, it matures relatively quickly for a large watermelon (fitting better into our shorter high-elevation season with transplants), and it's reliably recommended by USU Extension as a productive, high-quality option for home growers when given consistent care and space.
