Standing only 4'10", she was frequently told by men that she should be at home raising children instead of climbing mountains, and she even survived being buried by a massive avalanche during her historic ascent. Beyond her physical feats, Junko was a pioneer in environmentalism, spending her later years advocating for the protection of mountain ecozystems from "high-altitude junk."
