On the ground it is the thing everyone complains about. From directly overhead, it is one of the most beautiful patterns in the city. A downtown Los Angeles interchange seen from straight above, ramps curving out from the center like the petals of an enormous concrete flower, a bridge cutting a clean X through the middle. Golden light rakes low across the decks, autumn trees burn orange in the gaps, and every car is a person on their way somewhere. Chaos on the ground. Pure geometry from above. I lined the drone up directly over the center and waited for the light to skim across the concrete so the structure would read in three dimensions instead of flat gray. The trick with a frame like this is patience and symmetry, holding perfectly level and dead center while the whole city moves underneath. It is the most ordinary place in Los Angeles, made strange and beautiful by the angle. For anyone who finds order in the chaos and beauty in the everyday machinery of a great city.
