At full height it overlaps with the background zone — leaves reaching 30–50cm in well-established specimens — which makes it the only Crypt besides Balansae that genuinely fills background space. Differentiated from Balansae by leaf form rather than height: where Balansae produces broad leaves with deep lateral crinkling, Spiralis produces narrow ribbon leaves that are nearly as long but a fraction of the width, with the twist coming from the overall leaf orientation rather than surface corrugation. The twist varies between individual leaves and between growth periods — some leaves spiral more pronouncedly than others, giving the plant an organic irregularity that makes it look genuinely grown rather than arranged. Reaches 30–50cm — genuine background height possible — in good conditions with adequate substrate nutrition, Spiralis leaves reach substantial heights that allow it to function as a background plant in mid-sized tanks. Unlike Vallisneria at similar heights, it does not spread aggressively by runners and does not require constant trimming to manage — it fills background space more gradually and at a more measured rate, which suits planted tank layouts where background space is limited. Deep olive-green that darkens toward the base — the leaf colour is a deep, slightly muted olive-green — darker and more subdued than the bright greens of Vallisneria or the warm yellow-green of Lutea — with a darkening toward the base of each leaf. Melt on introduction — normal and temporary — like all Crypts, Spiralis will drop existing leaves after being moved to a new tank. The new leaves may be narrower and more pronounced in their twist than the emersed-grown nursery leaves — this is normal submersed adaptation. How to Set It Up Getting Started 1Plant in the midground-to-background zone with crown at surface — Spiralis works in the transition zone between midground and background — behind lower foreground and midground plants but in front of or alongside Vallisneria and other tall background plants. Push roots into substrate with the crown fractionally above the surface. Plant in a small group of three to five plants spaced 3–5cm apart for an established-looking cluster from the outset rather than a single stem that takes months to develop visual density. 2Use root tabs if not using active substrate — place a root tab within 5cm of the planting group. Spiralis's maximum leaf height and the development of the characteristic leaf twist are both nutritionally dependent — well-fed plants produce longer, more dramatically twisted leaves than underfed plants in nutrient-poor substrate. 3Leave undisturbed through the melt — recovery takes two to four weeks — if leaves melt after introduction, leave the rhizome completely in place. Remove only fully decomposed material.
