According to a sutra narrative, the relics of Shariputra, one of Shakyamuni's closest followers, were venerated in the home of a lay disciple. The worshippers were upset not to be able to worship the relics when the layman left, barring his door. When this was brought to Shakyamuni's notice, he directed that an exterior reliquary holding Shariputra's relics be built, to which all people would have ongoing free access.Shakyamuni then described its design as having four progressively climbing stairs, a circular vase base, a vase dome, a square harmika, an axle-pole, a rain cover, and from one to thirteen umbrellas.
