Samnite warriors were renowned for their colourful appearance, with brightly decorated tunics and equipment that reflected the individuality of each fighter rather than a standardised uniform. Their primary weapons included javelins, short spears, and a variety of round and oval shields, allowing them to fight effectively in the broken terrain of southern Italy. Many Samnite infantry wore a distinctive Italian-style bronze cuirass, consisting of small breast and back plates connected by hinged shoulder straps. Among the most recognisable designs was the famous triple-disc cuirass, an iconic symbol of the Samnite warrior and one of the defining features of their military equipment.
