FAQ Do I need a license to use this radio?To transmit day-to-day, yes — a valid HAM license is required. Listening is always license-free. One exception: FCC rules (47 CFR §97.403 and §97.405) permit any means of radiocommunication necessary for the immediate safety of life or protection of property when normal systems aren't available — and the FCC has a long-standing practice of not enforcing licensing requirements against unlicensed individuals who transmit during a genuine, life-threatening emergency with no other communication option, like a major natural disaster such as Hurricane Helene. We recommend every customer get properly licensed, but you're covered in that limited scenario. Beyond that, it's on the operator to comply with all local and federal regulations. What gets programmed onto my radio?We program it for your area — local repeaters and NOAA weather stations for monitoring. We'll follow up by email with a recommended programming guide before anything's finalized, so you can weigh in on what goes on your radio.
