Antique Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket (花籠, Hanakago), Wisteria Branch Handle Japan, early 20th century Approx. 16"H × 10"D (41 × 25 cm) A sculptural ikebana flower basket (花籠, hanakago) woven in wide, flat-cut bamboo strips in a bold diagonal plaiting pattern that gives the globular body its dynamic, swirling surface. The handle is a single unworked wisteria branch — bark retained, gnarled and sinuous — arching high above the basket in the naturalistic wabi aesthetic favored by period craft. Interior shows an open weave at the base consistent with use of a vessel insert for fresh arrangements. The deep reddish-brown patina across both basket and handle suggests either deliberate lacquer treatment or long-acquired age tone. Condition: Structurally intact; minor losses and irregularities to the weave consistent with age and use. Natural patina throughout. A strong sculptural presence — the wisteria handle alone makes this piece. Well-suited to ikebana practice or display as a standalone decorative object.
