The high heat and humidity causes the sugar in the woods (hemicellulose) to caramelize and the cell walls of the wood changes its composition. This transformation of Carbonization brings on new characteristics, i.e., more durable yet light weight, antimicrobial (resistant against fungi and insects), hypo allergenic and a radical reduction in water absorption.
