The Scharnhorst was lead ship of Nazi Germany's Scharnhorst-class capital ships, commissioned in 1939 and armed with nine 28cm guns in three triple turrets. She raided Atlantic shi pping alongside sister ship Gneisenau, sank the British aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escorting destroyers off Norway in June 1940, and was ultimately sunk at the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943 by the battleship HMS Duke of York and supporting cruisers and destroyers.
