Sturmpioniere ("assault pioneers") were the German army's elite combat engineers, trained to spearhead attacks on fortified positions, clear obstacles under fire and fight house-to -house with demolition charges, flamethrowers and satchel charges. This set depicts them on the Eastern Front in 1942, the year in which German assault pioneer battalions were thrown into the brutal urban fighting typified by the Stalingrad campaign. Dragon's figures for this release are sculpted with the specialised kit these troops carried into close-quarter combat: flamethrower apparatus, demolition charges and sub-machine guns rather than standard rifle-and-pack infantry loadouts. The poses and equipment reflect the aggressive, close-range nature of pioneer assault tactics rather than routine soldiering. As with Dragon's other 1/35 figure releases, the kit is moulded in crisp grey styrene with finely rendered uniform folds, webbing and personal kit, and the box includes decal options for insignia where applicable.
