I worked as an au pair in the south of France in my early 20s and I remember being struck by the endless fields of sunflowers. In fact, the lady of the house was very well to do an d was hosting a 60th birthday party for her considerably older husband and had commissioned an entire field of sunflowers to be grown, then beheaded and to be placed on the grassy verge leading up to the driveway of the villa.
