Fanciful bookmark of Medieval flora and fauna of a damselfly and snail hidden among blue lilies. This detail was taken from the margin of an unknown illuminated French manuscript f rom about 1528-30 in the collection of the Getty Museum.- Finish: Solid brass, electro-plated with non-tarnishing silver finish, giclee print - Dimensions: Approx. 1.75 inches W x 3.5 inches L - With packaging: 8 inches H x 2.5 inches W - Item #: BKS6871Blossoms strewn on a gold ground surround the opening text of the preface to Saint Paul's Epistles. Painted life-size and casting fictive shadows on the background, the flowers appear almost real. Nestled among the flowers are a variety of insects and a snail. The anonymous French illuminator of this page adapted his design from the illusionistic borders of earlier Flemish manuscripts, a common practice among French artists of the early 1500s. A more reserved floral motif decorates the gold ground of the initial letter P of the text.
