Surrounded by fellow travellers in what became known as the Soulquarian collective — Questlove, James Poyser, J Dilla, Pino Palladino, Roy Hargrove, Charlie Hunter, Raphael Saadiq — D'Angelo produced a record that deliberately pulled neo-soul back to its pre-drum-machine roots: live takes, wobbling time, vintage gear, the sound of a band in a room. The thirteen-track sequence moves from the James Brown-referencing Playa Playa through the DJ Premier co-produced Devil's Pie, the Method Man and Redman-featured Left & Right, the cover of Roberta Flack's Feel Like Makin' Love, the slow-motion bedroom centrepiece Untitled (How Does It Feel), and the closing Africa. It won Grammys for Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and is widely considered one of the defining records of the last quarter-century. This 2×LP reissue on Virgin / UMe presents the album across four sides, pressed in the United States. Tracklist Side A Playa Playa Devil's Pie Left & Right (feat.
