Darmera peltata is a massive, moisture-loving architectural giant that naturally grows along the edges of woodland bogs and streams. It is famous for pushing up tall, naked stems t opped with pale pink starry flowers before its true spectacle emerges: enormous, heavily veined umbrella-like leaves that claim a massive physical footprint and turn a brilliant fiery bronze-red colour in the autumn. To keep it alive, you must respect its absolute demand for damp, heavy soil and partial to full shade. It uses thick underground rhizomes to slowly march outward, so you must give it plenty of room to spread and never allow the dirt to bake dry, or the massive leaves will instantly crisp around the edges and collapse.
