Dartanol is the highest quality Laevo form of Bacdanol. It is the same chemical but the purest and finest version. It can be used one for one in place of Bacdanol for a richer and more cosmetic result. Blends of Dartanol with Polysantol and Firsantol are supreme but significantly more Dartanol can be used in a fragrance because a) it is not restricted by IFRA, and b) it is less powerful than the others. But despite that, you should not be fooled into thinking Dartanol is not a powerful and rich sandalwood chemical. It is, in fact, one of the finest substitutes for natural sandalwood in chemical form and a simple combination of Dartanol with Ebanol is a truly classic combo. Perfumery: Techniques in Evolution (a series of articles published in Perfumer and Flavorist magazine) sings the praises of this material thus: “[Dartanol] is better than Bacdanol. It is similar but more beautiful, more radiant, possessing a more natural sandalwood character. It is also more diffusive. I believe [Dartanol] will slowly replace Bacdanol because, although similar, it is both comparably priced and livelier. The material’s uses are similar to those of Bacdanol.” For more information on Sandalwood aromatics, see our Sandalwood Synthetics Primer.
