Goldblatt’s edition for Modern Art Oxford was originally produced to accompany his 2003 exhibition Fifty-One Years, which documented the social, personal and political upheavals in the history of South Africa, from the 1950s to the present day, through photography and film. This black and white photograph is typical of Goldblatt’s celebrated style. The work is one of the ‘Boksburg’ series that documents the characters and luminaries of the South African Boksburg mining province, which were taken across a two-year period between 1979-1980. The ‘Boksburg’ series looked at the margins and suburbs of the town, where apartheid enforced rules that black people were only allowed into ‘white-only’ areas to travel on special occasions with a permit. Goldblattt said of Boksburg, ‘It held me. Literally for days on end, I stood riveted to street corners, parking lots and sidewalks. I was completely engaged by what I saw and tried to penetrate and hold with the camera, of the wholly uneventful flow of commonplace, orderly life.’ This edition has become quite rare since the artist's death in 2018.
