Butt Deluxe 03:36 Text excerpt by ULYSSA: "...For the partitioners up there in the nosebleeds, David Michael Moore, 74, is a musician and woodworker from Rosedale, Mississippi. He creates elegant and unconventional woodcraft. Shaker chairs and birthing chairs. He weaves sycamore branches into benches, cradles, and canopy beds. He hews magnolia heartwood into massive bowls — each of their undersides pressed with his two-letter calling card: “UM.”We’re gathered here today because David also makes his own instruments. Zithers, bass harps, wooden drums, buzz boxes, boing boxes and dog bone xylophones. He uses these “perverted,” hybrid instruments — along with more standard instruments like piano, synths and drums — to make ecstatic compositions twirling amid zydeco, Sufi mystical music, Moondog and the prepared piano pieces of John Cage.David is also a bit of a hermit — or rather, “a lot of a hermit.” He’s lived most every day of his life in Rosedale, a decaying town on the Mississippi River that David referred to as “Dildodale” in our earliest email exchanges. It’s one of those places that America has sadly all but forsaken. He’s there now, among his books of philosophy and music theory of the Far East, next to his wood stove and a roof collapsing under the limb of a magnolia tree. Of course, David has very much been around: A trip to Memphis on the day Elvis died; A visit to DC when he was invited to play at Kennedy Center; to New Orleans Jazz Festival where he both performed and showed his woodcraft. But a minor stroke and profound loss have made the last 20 years a more solitary and stationary existence, often without phone service or Internet. But this music — David’s astonishing, powerful music — is ALL MOVEMENT. All activity. All rising and falling. All shimmering and ceaseless. Leapfrogging across The Centuries. Lillypadding betwixt Heaven and Earth. Piercing the veil and back again at the speed of a hiccup. Sure, David is a hermit but more so, he’s a Hermeticist — a conjurer and trickster, a necromancer and lovable reprobate. As above so below and no holds barred on us betwixt. Folly and wisdom in a bumbling ballet. Across his previous albums, David’s ~philosophy was almost exclusively expressed through his brilliant, rhythmic compositions. On Umburkus, he brings storytelling to the fore in a whispery voice that recalls JJ Cale and Dylan. His lyrical insights are erudite and hilarious. Spiritual and bawdy. He’s buying liver cheese in the country grocery while in conversation with the Ancients. He strolls with Heraclitus along the banks of the Mississippi. He dwells on its constant flux. Its ceaseless flow, awash in history both cursed and benevolent. He’s evading a murderous sheriff and ducking into a House of Low Repute where patrons have morphed into dogs. He’s at the Gates of Hell with Milton and Dante shaking his head at man’s foibles. He’s finding sweet transcendence in a lover’s big ol’ juicy ass. Deepfried angel wings in vinegar BBQ. Jazz apples packed with Leaves of Grass. “No names have been changed to protect anyone. They could care less anyway,” David says of these songs..."
