The extreme aridity of the Namib preserves them in place indefinitely - their forms unchanged for centuries, the cracked clay beneath them equally still. At sunrise the light arrives from the east and hits the dune face obliquely, revealing the wind-carved texture of the sand in full detail and turning the orange to a warm, almost luminous ochre. The trees, dark against the pale clay floor, cast shadows that give the otherwise flat pan a sense of depth and time of day that the midday image entirely lacks. Where the open edition version of this subject is graphic and high-contrast, this image is warm and painterly - closer in feeling to a landscape painting than a photograph.
